The company’s products are used across a diverse number of applications in the aviation, oil, gas, marine and wind energy markets as well as for roads and highways.

Biral has a track record of designing and making innovative products including advanced weather sensors covering precipitation, wind, speed and direction, temperature, visibility and thunderstorm detection through to aerosol analysers.  Biral also develops bespoke products to meet specific customer requirements and has a successful history in collaboration with leading universities.

The company name Biral is an acronym for Bristol Industrial Research Association Ltd and it is engaged in continuous research and development in the meteorological field to bring tried and tested products to market.

Biral has experienced strong sales growth over the last four years coming from an international client base stretching from Tokyo to Vancouver. The company continues to expand its team, recently strengthening this in engineering, sales and marketing.

Research and development continues apace and one of the most recent products to emerge is the new BTD-300 Thunderstorm Detector which for the first time in the market is able to warn of imminent thunder and lightning up to 83km away.  Nathan Neal, Biral’s Marketing Director comments, “Further products will come out of the company’s forward research and development programme and we have an ambitious growth plan based on increasing market share in our established markets where Biral is recognised for innovative, high specification products with proven reliability”.

Such is the quality and reliability of its products, that Biral has recently extended the warranty on many of its visibility and present weather sensors to 5 years as standard, with the option of extending this to 15 years. This is a testament to the precision engineering, high quality materials, quality control and the company’s extensive market experience.

When the company was founded in 1975, Biral was a leading UK distributor of scientific instrumentation in aerosol science, meteorology, fluid mechanics, filter testing and environmental monitoring.  By 1993, Biral had moved into engineering and manufacture, leading to a series of contracts with the UK Ministry of Defence to develop specialist biological warfare agent detection equipment. The aerosol technology used in these contracts was developed in collaboration with the University of Hertfordshire and this brought about a range of commercial aerosol monitoring instruments.  Four years later in 1997, Biral acquired market leading visibility and present weather sensor technology from the US company HSS Inc., and this in turn led to the manufacture of its own meteorological sensing devices which has gradually been expanded over the years to establish Biral as a leader in this market.
